Battery Draining Fast? Common Causes for Phones, Tablets & Laptops

Phone with critical low battery warning

You charge your phone to 100% in the morning. By lunch, it's at 30%. If this sounds like your daily reality, you're not alone. Battery drain is the most common complaint we hear at our shop in Ta' Xbiex — across iPhones, Samsung, Xiaomi, iPads, and MacBooks alike. Malta's heat makes it worse — batteries degrade faster in warm climates.

Software Causes (The Easy Fixes)

Background App Refresh

Apps like Facebook, Instagram, email, and news apps constantly refresh content in the background. Each refresh uses data, processor power, and battery. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh (iPhone) or Settings → Battery → Background Usage (Android) and disable it for apps that don't need real-time updates.

Screen Brightness

Your display is the single biggest battery consumer. Auto-brightness is your friend — it adjusts based on ambient light. If you manually keep brightness at maximum (common outdoors in Malta's bright sunshine), you're burning through battery 2-3x faster than necessary.

Location Services

GPS is extremely power-hungry. Check which apps have "Always" location access and switch them to "While Using" or "Never". You'll be surprised how many apps track your location without good reason.

Hardware Causes (When It's Time for Repair)

Battery Degradation

Every battery has a limited number of charge cycles. After 500-800 full cycles (roughly 2-3 years of daily use), capacity drops significantly. In Malta's warm climate, this degradation happens even faster — heat is the #1 enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Check your battery health:

  • iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
  • Samsung: Samsung Members app → Diagnostics → Battery
  • MacBook: Hold Option, click Apple menu → System Information → Power

Below 80% capacity? It's time for a replacement.

Faulty Charging Circuit

If your phone charges slowly, gets hot while charging, or the battery percentage jumps erratically (80% → 40% → 65%), the charging IC on the motherboard may be faulty. This is a motherboard-level repair but very fixable by experienced technicians.

Swollen Battery

If your screen is slightly lifting from the frame, or you notice a bulge on the back of your phone, you likely have a swollen battery. This is a safety hazard. Stop using the device immediately.

Laptops and Tablets Too

iPads, Samsung tablets, and MacBooks all suffer the same battery degradation over time. MacBooks are especially prone because they're often left plugged in 24/7, which accelerates battery wear. If your laptop barely lasts an hour unplugged, a battery replacement will transform it back into a portable device.
